About Us
Progressive Pathways Consulting works with leaders and organisations that are ready to close the gap between where they are and where they know they could be.
When teams are disengaged, burnt out, or simply going through the motions — the problem is rarely about capability. It’s almost always about culture. And culture change requires more than a new set of values on a wall. It requires leadership behaviour that truly matches what the organisation claims to stand for.
That’s where we come in.
Founded by leadership coach and culture strategist Anita Stephen, Progressive Pathways brings together culture transformation, leadership coaching, and organisational development to help leaders build environments where people don’t just comply — they commit. Where kindness isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a strategy. And where performance, wellbeing, and retention stop being competing priorities and start reinforcing each other.
We work across multiple sectors and cultures — from corporates and NGOs to education institutions — bringing a practical, human-centred approach that balances genuine care for people with the business outcomes that matter to leaders.

Pathways to Thriving
The Pathways to Thriving podcast was created out of a desire to increase the diversity of voices we hear and learn from. It is a conversational-style podcast where leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs from all over the world share their transformative, resilient, and inspirational journeys. As we learn from their wisdom and best practices, we gain deeper insight and perspective on building workplaces and communities that are truly inclusive and equitable. The last question at the end of every episode is a podcast signature, giving guests the space to broaden and deepen the meaning of ‘thriving.’

Anita Stephen
Founder, Progressive Pathways Consulting
I believe that kindness is not a soft option. It is a strategy — and one that most organisations are leaving completely untapped. I know this because I have lived on both sides of the equation.
As a practising lawyer, I worked hardest and delivered my best when I was trusted, respected, and given room to think. As an entrepreneur in Kuala Lumpur, I built a team by giving people the same — and watched them go all out for something they believed in. Earlier experience building a business taught me that a foundation of integrity is non-negotiable. It spurs loyalty and the creativity to overcome even the most difficult challenges to your values.
And as a training and organisational development consultant, I experienced something that shifted my understanding permanently. When I was first diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, neither I nor the people around me fully understood what was happening. Despite performing consistently well, the uncertainty created tensions that nobody — including me — had the tools to navigate. I didn’t need unkindness to lose my footing. I just needed the absence of a framework for it. That experience changed everything. It gave me a methodology. And it gave me a mission.
Today I work with leaders and organisations who sense that something is missing — that their people are not performing at their full potential, that burnout or disengagement is quietly costing them, and that the old industrial-era playbook is no longer working in a world where needs, expectations, and the very nature of work have fundamentally shifted.
My approach is built on a simple but powerful idea: that psychological safety, authentic leadership, and what I call Strategic Kindness are not just good values — they are measurable performance levers.
I have worked across multiple sectors and cultures — from building the Alumni and Donor Relations Office at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus from the ground up, to designing coaching frameworks for senior leaders operating across 160 countries. Across every context, one pattern emerged consistently: culture change stalls when leadership behaviour doesn’t match the values an organisation claims to hold. Strategic Kindness starts at the top — or it doesn’t start at all.
In August 2026, Penguin Random House will publish my book — making the business case for kindness in the workplace in a way that I hope will change how leaders everywhere think about performance, people, and what it truly means to lead.
If you are a leader who wants your people to stop merely complying and start truly owning — I would love to talk.
